The American victory shattered the Mexican government, triggering its collapse and bringing a definitive end to the war. The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, signed in 1848, cemented the terms of surrender. Through this treaty, the United States seized control of northern Mexico, gaining not just vast territories but also securing its dominance in the Western Hemisphere. The war's conclusion marked the U.S. as the prevailing power on the continent, reshaping the balance of power across the Americas.
